The Bowling Club is one of the oldest teams in the university; it was established in 1967 and has enjoyed many successful seasons throughout the years. The club has won numerous national championships and as recently as 2008 the team were BUCS champions, as well as Sheffield University team of the year. Since 2008, the club has routinely welcomed members from Hallam University, and are working hard to establish an independent team for our cross-city neighbours.

The club runs a weekly league for members to practice and enjoy competition with each other. The league is held in a relaxed atmosphere and is open to all abilities. It is handicapped, which means that extra pins will be added to your score depending on your average score from previous weeks.

The club takes part in tournaments throughout the year, held across the country and arranged by the British Universities Tenpin Bowling Association (BUTBA). This gives members the chance to represent Sheffield against the likes of Nottingham, Loughborough, Warwick and many more to compete for the order of merit title at the end of the year. Many of these tournaments are handicapped and open to all entries. We take great pride in the tournament we host annually – Sheffield Quads, which typically is one of the best attended on the calender. In 2012 we were able to enter 16 players from Sheffield alone.

However its not all about bowling, another important part of the club is the socials. We don’t just have a great time bowling but also going out and getting to know each other more at a variety of venues. We have secured discounts at a variety of bars around Sheffield, as well as arranging social sessions in coffee shops and pool bars to cater to every member.

We feel that having a good mix of bowlers will only help to enrich the club as a whole, therefore we are always willing to greet new members with open arms! We hope that the high standard that has already been set by the club will perpetuate itself into future seasons and maintain the standard of club that has been present for so many years at Sheffield University.

We welcome new members throughout the year, so if you would like to join the tenpin bowling club, please contact a member of the committee or e-mail the club.
